Rated 5 out of 5 by Kenubis from Works as described Not many bells and whistles, with minimal editing and trimming ability. But works exactly as described. Have downloaded more than 40 VHS and 8MM family video tapes in the past two weeks.
Saved in my PC as MP4 files. No noticeable loss of quality. Have burned several DVDs and will backup rest on dedicated hard drive. Unless you know what is on all of your tapes, a necessary downside to this process is the need to preview original tapes to determine what is on them and what you want to convert. Then there's the time it takes to play each tape from beginning to end during conversion. But it sure beats spending +/-$ per tape to have someone else burn them to a disk. Rated 3 out of 5 by Terry from Easy to Use - good low res solution Important to know that this is a fairly low resolution solution to create smaller MP4 files.

Bit rate is not scalable and is set around 1.5Mbps with 48k stereo audio. If you are looking to create video files that you'll be editing, this probably isn't the best solution. Good applications for this are - creating low res reference archive files for large video libraries or transferring your old analog VHS tapes so you can share w/family & friends. This system is very easy to install and use, even for the novices. Rated 5 out of 5 by granite36 from Works perfectly! I have transferred many VHS tapes to data files with Video Capture, and it works perfectly with my Mac Mini.
I used svideo and standard audio cabling from my VCR. The setup was absolutely simple, and it's great to be able to crop at beginning and end so that I can leave the recording running longer than the tape and then cut it to size without needing to open with a video editing program. My end result is DVDs, and burning the data files with title and chapter menus is easy using iDVD. The whole process takes a long time, but it runs unattended. The latest online update to Video Capture added a couple of nice features - audio level control, and video color, brightness and contrast controls.
This update came out soon after I installed the version from the boxed set, and was a welcome enhancement. The A/V settings are set in a Preferences dialog box, and are remembered from one session to the next. Rated 5 out of 5 by Tony from Would buy this product again and have already told friends.
Have lots of vhs to transfer and decided on elgato after reading reviews of many different devices. This wasn't the cheapest nor the most expensive but had really good reviews. This thing works great and easy to use software also which needs to be downloaded but also a very easy process. Have had no problem with audio sync that was a problem with other devices I reviewed. I use the s-video line but would probably do a good with the yellow line in.
Just remember you are still going to get vhs quality-nothing will change that. After transferring to my computer I use Anyburn (free) to burn to dvd-also simple to use. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Works as advertised So far, I have copied from commercial VHS tapes and home-movie VHS-C tapes and it works just the way it is supposed to. I am transferring these into an iMac.
Where I use iMovie and iDVD to edit. The quality of the transferred tapes is great. I still plan to transfer from DVD's, but have not done that as yet.
If I am absolutely sure of what I want, I will order online. However, for many purchases, I will do a lot of online research, narrow my choices to two or three, and then call in to speak with a salesperson at B&H. Good experiences keep me coming back.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Simple, easy to use Bought this to convert a bunch of old family videos on VHS over to digital. Have not been disappointed. It's very easy to install & use, plus, I've encountered none of the audio synching problems I've read about with other (cheaper) brands.
One quibble: Sometimes when I start recording a tape, when I come back to it a few hours later, there's no digital file of the thing anywhere on my computer (it's supposed to automatically deposit the digital file to wherever you designate). It's as if the thing closes automatically if you're not there within a few minutes of it finishing. Kinda weird and have had to re-do a few recording because of that. Still though, a good system. Rated 5 out of 5 by Linwood from Great product!
Software and product work well. I was a little unsure if this would work but i have been very pleasantly surprised. It works great-I downloaded the software onto my laptop so the VHS tapes I was copying would record straight to the video folder in my computer. I can see a screen of the video as it plays and records on my computer. It records in MP4 so the file isn't so big. From there I open my Adobe 14 Premiere editing program and I can drop the file into the timeline for editing.
You can add other media or edit and trim the footage in the time line and then burn to a file or a DVD. Really works well-now I can get rid of all those VHS tapes!
Rated 4 out of 5 by Musiqman from Solid product for a simple good job Works well. Quick 3 plug hookup to left right and video (white, red and yellow respectively) Also an S-plug is included if you use that for slightly better quality than the yellow video plug.Software is utilitarian.
Does the job. You get one shot at trimming (editing the beginning and the end) Can't go back. The editing is coarse. The slightest movement of the mouse to change start and stop times can move the video 15 - 30 seconds. You'll need to edit later with a 3rd party video editor. But for most usage and just banging out digital files from any video source even live TV it will be a good quick utility.
Transfer video to your Mac or PC from a VCR, DVR, camcorder, or any other analogue video device as a high quality H.264 file. Verified Buyer Top 50 Contributor Reviewer: GiantSalamander Location: New York City Age: 55-65 Experience Level: Power User Owned Product: 1-3 months Rating: 4/5 Good quality captures (mostly), easy software January 24, 2017 Using this to capture hours and hours of 1/2 hour interview shows from old DVCam videotapes. The quality is fine for the interviews, the only time I can see an issue is with some footage of water that is in the opening of each tape. That doesn't compress very well but I don't care as it's only a few seconds and that's not what is important to archive.
We could capture thru FireWire with an editing program but the Elgato method is easy and one step to the result we want which is h264 files not DV or ProRes. I would recommend this item to a friend! Customer Videos. Verified Buyer Top 50 Contributor Reviewer: Anonymous Location: Hansville WA Age: Over 65 Experience Level: Power User Owned Product: 3-4 months Rating: 5/5 GREAT gadget; seems to copy ANYthing February 4, 2016 Finally finished copying/moving a significant part of a terabyte of videos, from elderly VHS and BetaMax tapes, into MP4 files. This included both prerecorded, commercially-sold VHS and BetaMax tapes - some of them surely 'copy-protected' (THEY tho't!) as well as home recordings - some of which were most of maybe 8-9 hours long (slowest speed on 180-minute tapes - i.e.
540-minute-=max recordings!). Also copied various programs - both live and internally recorded on the service-provider's DVR - from various cable shows. ALL of it was EASY; NO problems at all. Well, except for the VERY old VHS and BetaMax players. Which left MUCH to be desired. (But that was NOT the Elgato's problem; it did it's best!:-) I would recommend this item to a friend!
Verified Buyer Reviewer: Anonymous Location: Long Beach, CA Age: Over 65 Experience Level: Home User Owned Product: 1-3 months Rating: 5/5 Excellent Device January 28, 2016 The Elgato Video Capture device connected to my MacBook Pro (MacOS 10.9.5) and captured my Verizon DVR content. I was able to transfer the files into iMovie HD and process the content, and write the content to DVD using iDVD 7. This simple to use device was the perfect solution to download my DVR content. I would recommend this item to a friend! Verified Buyer Reviewer: Anonymous Location: Carlsbad, CA Age: 55-65 Experience Level: Home User Owned Product: 1-3 months Rating: 4/5 Great, But not for El Capitan November 2, 2015 Purchased Elgato Video Capture about a month ago, and originally started using it with the Mavericks OS. Product worked very well, easy and intuitive to use. Then I upgraded my OS to El Capitan, and everything went haywire.
Audio was either over-recorded to distortion levels, or missing entirely. The picture would often freeze during recording etc. In communicating with Elgato technical support, and after they remotely analyzed my Video Capture device plugged into my Macbook Pro, they told me that El Capitan changes the USB configuration and interferes with their device. They suggested going back to Yosemite OS or Mavericks. I switched back to Mavericks, and now the Video Capture device works perfectly again. Unfortunately, Elgato does not warn you via their website that this product won't work with El Capitan, and I think they really should.
I would highly recommend the Elgato Video Capture, but not for El Capitan. I would recommend this item to a friend! Reviewer: BenM Location: Fox River Grove, IL Age: 25-34 Experience Level: IT Professional Rating: 5/5 Simplicity at its finest!
February 22, 2013 I purchased this to convert my old VHS tapes into a digital format so I can finally throw away my antiquated VHS Player. I had the software installed and the hardware setup within minutes. My first VHS was importing within 5minutes of opening the box and that is counting the 1.5 minutes it took to rewind the VHS. Apparently the last time I watched the VHS, I forgot the old 'Be Kind Rewind' saying.
I would recommend this item to a friend!
